Career Goals:

My goal is to conduct research on the ecology and management of pinyon-juniper, encinal (oak), and semi-desert grassland ecosystems that will improve available information and contribute to management for their sustained and improved health and productivity. The impacts of silvicultural options and/or prescribed fire are of particular interest. One goal is to complete existing studies. New results should be helpful to federal, state, and private land managers.

Current Research and Science Application Projects:

Effects of fuels/fire risk reduction treatments using hydro-mow or thinning on pinyon-juniper ecosystem components within the wildland-urban-interface (with Steve Overby; JFSP Funding.)

The Peloncillo Watershed Study: Effects of two prescribed burning prescriptions on the oak savanna ecosystem in the Southwestern Borderlands (The Cascabel Study) (with Dan Neary, Don Decker (NRCS), faculty and students of the University of Arizona).

Restoration of a semi-desert savanna-grassland in the southwestern borderlands of Arizona and New Mexico (with Don Decker (NRCS)).

Evaluating the effects of pinyon-juniper silvicultural prescriptions on the growth and survival of overstory trees and tree regeneration and slash production in central Arizona.

Special Assignments:

Gottfried is the research liaison on the Tonto National Forest. He is also the representative to the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER and Desert Southwest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit. Gottfried is a science advisor to the Malpai Borderlands Group, Douglas, Arizona. Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Natural Resources, University of Arizona.
