About the Flagstaff Lab Image Database
A picture is worth a thousand words - if you can find it!
This
project developed from the need for researchers to locate specific images
for presentations, papers, etc. from among thousands. "Where is that great
slide of the Mt. Elden fire I took years ago?" This can be a daunting
task involving hours holding sleeves of slides up to the light of the office
window. In an effort to better manage large image collections we developed
this project.
Central to the project is a database that holds information associated
with each image. This includes subject, location, photographer, media type
and so forth. As these data are input into the database the image is scanned.
The end product is a searchable database of images. This provides the ability
for one to intelligently search one's own collection as well as other shared collections.
Ah! Now I can search for Mt. Elden Fire and find it quickly. Perhaps I'll even find
other slides of the fire in a colleagues collection.
With the database built we can make these images available to the public
via the Web. Forest Service images are generally in the public domain so
why not share them openly?
That is how this project came to be. If you find the image collections to be useful, if
you are a RMRS based researcher and you are interested in including
your images or if you have questions about the details of this system let us know.
Current record count is 13646.
